Tavistock Short Game Area
Designed by former Ryder Cup player Manuel Piñero with his team at Target Golf and constructed by M J Abbott, the Tavistock Short Game Area is a world class short game practice facility located in the pines and modelled on the Woburn courses.
The Tavistock Short Game Area gives players the opportunity to play and practice a selection of shots from within 90 yards from different lies with the flexibility to allow multiple users.
The area is so versatile that it can be used by beginners to learn and more importantly enjoy playing a variety of shots in a golfing environment, offering a different dimension to range practice whilst still having the facilities needed for elite level practice. In addition, all-weather mats have been installed at several points to allow year round practice.
The Tavistock Short Game Area is located just a five minute walk from the Clubhouse.
Brief and construction
The brief for the Tavistock Short Game Area was to create a short game facility located within the pines modelled on the Woburn courses. The design was to consider a vast variance of shots up to 90 yards, to incorporate pitching, chipping and bunker play. Flexibility was required within the design to allow multiple users and be able to create a children’s/beginners course with three or four short holes.
Construction of the Tavistock Short Game Area was completed in 60 days, work commenced in July 2014, green cultivation and seeding took place during August 2014, grow in started in September 2014 with the facility opened by Manuel Piñero in June 2015.
Using the facility
Use of the Tavistock Short Game Area is included within Woburn Golf Club members' membership fee and can be used by non-members when booking a short game coaching session or as part of a corporate golf day.
Use of the facility is by individual time slots via the Professional Shop, similar to booking a tee time. When using the Tavistock Short Game Area, please ensure you play within the zone allocated, the area is designed to provide an array of shots from each zone.
Please be mindful of the golf playing on the 1st and 2nd holes of the Duke’s course when on the Tavistock Short Game Area.
When using the Tavistock Short Game Area please ensure you observe the standard etiquette for golf and practice. Please remember to manage your divot pattern, repair your pitch marks and rake the bunkers. It is important that you are always aware of other golfers and play away from them whilst they collect their balls.
